Facility Agriculture Development Seminar in Beijing
On January 14, 2025, the Greenhouse Farming Branch of the China Agricultural Mechanization Association hosted the "Symposium on the Development Prospects of Greenhouse Farming During the 15th Five-Year Plan" in Beijing. The conference aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and challenges facing greenhouse farming in the coming period, explore industry trends and innovative pathways, and promote high-quality development in the sector. Qi Fei, Chief Engineer of the Agricultural Planning and Design Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and Chairman of the Branch, presided over the meeting and delivered a keynote report. Representatives from member organizations of the Branch also shared their insights.

In his report titled "The Development Trends of Greenhouse Farming in China and Our Work," Chairman Qi Fei analyzed the opportunities and challenges for greenhouse farming during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. He emphasized the need for comprehensive innovation in technology and institutional frameworks, focusing on key areas and directions to foster collective progress and shared responsibility. This, he noted, would drive the advancement of new productive forces in agriculture. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of strengthening the Branch’s role as a platform for collaborative innovation, policy consultation, and knowledge exchange, providing enhanced services for its members.
Gu Benjia, Chairman of Beijing Kingpeng Global Horticulture Corporation, delivered a speech titled "Opportunities and Challenges for Greenhouse Farming Enterprises." He pointed out that China's greenhouse farming sector is benefiting from strong policy support, rapid technological advancements, and growing market demand. However, challenges such as inconsistent local policy implementation, funding shortages, incomplete industry standards, narrow profit margins, talent deficits, and a lack of core technologies remain. He proposed that the industry should prioritize technological innovation, industrial integration, and ecological sustainability while exploring both domestic and international markets to achieve mutually reinforcing growth.

Li Qingming, Chief Scientist at the Urban Agriculture Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, presented "An Overview of Greenhouse Vegetable Farming in Sichuan." He systematically outlined the development of greenhouse vegetable production in Sichuan, covering climate characteristics, regional distribution, production scale, facility types, and farming models. He also identified existing issues, including weak environmental control, limited suitable crop varieties, low smart farming adoption, excessive pesticide use, and small-scale intensive production. Further advancements, he suggested, are needed in green, simplified, standardized, and intelligent production technologies.
Li Qi, Chairman of Zhangye Chaoyue Development Agriculture Co., Ltd., shared insights on "The Current State and Future of Greenhouse Farming in Northwest China." He analyzed the industry’s advantages in the region and highlighted his company’s technological strengths. Li Qi noted that China’s greenhouse farming sector could learn from international best practices in production models, branding strategies, management concepts, and talent development to better integrate global resources.

Tu Guoyuan, General Manager of Guangdong Huawang Agricultural Facility Technology Co., Ltd., discussed "The Development Status of Greenhouse Farming in South China." He provided an overview of greenhouse types, materials, climatic adaptations, and crop varieties in the region. Tu emphasized the need for pragmatic innovation to tap into local markets while also expanding horizons to explore overseas opportunities.

The symposium provided valuable insights into the development of modern greenhouse farming across different regions of China, fostering meaningful exchanges among participants. Attendees praised the event for its substantive discussions. Moving forward, the Branch will continue to uphold its mission, serving as a bridge to promote high-quality development in greenhouse farming and contribute more expertise to the sector in the new era.
